If you answered, YES! to any of these questions, then please read further.  You may be interested in an upcoming training for European teachers. 

ACT4RIVERS, a project funded by the European Commission under Comenius, is preparing a one-week teacher training course in April 2010 in Ramnicu Valcea, Romania.

What are the objectives of the training?
Participants will have the opportunity:
• to acquire new teaching ideas, tools and materials ready to use in the classroom and in the field
• to acquire knowledge about the topic of freshwater ecosystems
• to obtain competences on”active environmental citizenship”
• to exchange ideas and develop links with teachers from secondary schools in different European countries

How will it be taught?
• Hands-on activities, presentations, discussions and small group work.
• Fieldwork at a river to gain scientific working and teaching methods.
• Hands-on work with IT-tools.
• Examples of cross-curricular teaching and 1st hand experiences from other teachers.
• Planning a  “getting active” project and hearing about projects from experienced teachers.

Who should attend?
Educators!  The primary target group is secondary school science teachers (Chemistry, Biology, Geography, and Physics), but secondary school teacher trainers, nature educators and scientific staff at universities involved in “freshwater ecosystems” are also invited!

What is on the programme?
SUNDAY 18 APRIL 2010
Arrive Bucharest/RO, transport to Ramnicu Valcea, welcome dinner

MONDAY 19 APRIL 2010
Morning: Introduction to freshwater ecosystems, get in contact with the river
Afternoon: Introduction to “Free your River” and the IT-tools available (start your own “book of the river”)
Evening: Philharmonic orchestra concert

TUESDAY 20 APRIL 2010
Morning: Introduction to the checklist of “Free your River” and starting to work with it on the board of a river, data input (“Book of the river”)
Afternoon: Lecture, examples, workshop on cross-curricular teaching
Evening: Visit the "Village museum"

WEDNESDAY 21 APRIL 2010
Morning: Lecture and practical experience on collaboration with the web methods of “Free your River”
Afternoon: presentation of examples and group discussion
Free evening. Possibility for a tour of the local area.

THURSDAY 22 APRIL 2010
Morning: Lecture on scientific working methods, working with the checklist of “Free your River” on the board of a river (new chapters, comparison with scientific methods)
Afternoon: Scientific teaching methods, data input (“book of the river”), data interpretation
Evening: Trip to Horezu the famous region with traditional Romanian pottery and visit the Monastery of Horezu - UNESCO World Heritage monument

FRIDAY 23 APRIL 2010
Morning: Lecture, workshop on active citizenship
Afternoon: Presentation of examples, discussion with experienced teachers
Closing of the training
Evening: Farewell dinner in a traditional Romanian restaurant

SATURDAY 24 APRIL 2010
Transport to Bucharest, departure

The course in Ramnicu Valcea will be organized by the partners of ACT4RIVERS and be located at the Casa Corpului Didactic Valcea, Romania.

Monday 19th of April until Friday 23rd of April 2010 (18. and 24.4. are travelling days)

Accommodation & meals   €   660,-- / Participation fee    €   378,--
Total course fee    € 1038,-- 

Grant:    
There is a possibility to get a grant out of the Comenius or Grundtvig programme.
